Check the Job, Not Just the Quote

Before you quote: Markup Calculator

Start from your estimated cost and a target markup or margin to find a sell price. Use the Markup Calculator when you are pricing a job.

After you quote or finish: Job Profit Calculator

Start from the price you quoted or billed and the costs you actually had. See whether the job made what you expected, and how far the price could drop before you lose money.

How the Results Are Calculated

Total Entered Cost = Materials + Labor + Subs + Equipment + Travel + Other + Overhead

Estimated Job Profit = Job Price − Total Entered Cost

Profit Margin = Profit ÷ Job Price × 100

Markup on Cost = Profit ÷ Total Entered Cost × 100

Break-Even Price = Total Entered Cost

Example: an $8,500 job with $6,800 in direct costs and $600 in allocated overhead has $7,400 in total entered cost, $1,100 estimated job profit, a 12.9% margin, a 14.9% markup on cost, and a $7,400 break-even price.

What This Number Does Not Include

  • Costs you leave blank. Blank fields count as $0. If you skip overhead, the result shows what the job contributed toward overhead, not what was left after it.
  • Taxes. Income tax, self-employment tax, and sales tax are not calculated. Enter the job price without any sales tax you collect.
  • Your own pay. If you worked the job yourself and want to count your time, enter it under Labor.
  • Timing. Unpaid balances, retainage, and callbacks after the job are not reflected.

Because of this, estimated job profit is not the same as net profit for your business. Use it to compare jobs and spot ones that are priced too thin.
